Spicy Roasted Broccoli: My Diary of Us

Spicy Roasted Broccoli

Yesterday was my first day back on the health train.  Over the holidays I completely abandoned any sense of trying to watch what I eat.  I thought it was appropriate to eat sugar everyday sometimes even at breakfast and working out...what's that?  I had a reality check yesterday and gave myself a little pep talk about how that kind of behavior cannot continue into 2015.  After all, I'll be 31 next month and my metabolism isn't what it used to be!  I planned out meals for the week, exercised (ouch), and drank tons of citrus detox water, which will be on the blog Thursday!  This morning I woke up feeling ten times better from just one day of eating fresh!  Spicy roasted broccoli is one of my favorite go to healthy side dishes because it's full of nutrients, so tasty, and it might be the easiest dish to make, maybe ever.

When dinner rolls around you've been to work, possibly starting working out again, and by now it's pitch dark and the last thing you want to do is prep a big meal.  You need simple, you need fresh, it needs to taste good, and you need as few ingredients as possible.

Canean: My Diary of Us

Happy Birthday Canean

Happy Birthday Canean.  Your unwavering love for me continues to amaze me.  How we survived the first 20 years of our lives without one another, I am not sure.  Your ability to see me in ways that I can't see myself brings out better parts of me and who I want to be.

Stay wild at heart, because it's what I love most about you.  A lot of men lose their wild hearts and yours remains constant and ever seeking adventure just the way God intended it.  So as you turn another year older today, keep your boyish spirit and gusto to live each day to it's fullest because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

2014: My Diary of Us

2014 Ramblings and the Next Big Thing

Today is the last day of 2014.  Tomorrow will be 2015 and I can remember when the year 2000 was a big deal.  Time flies more quickly every year, making me want to try and slow things down a bit and to savor each day and moment that is offered to me.  As I look back over the past year, I am overwhelmed with what an amazing year it turned out to be.

We moved back to Louisiana after only being gone for a year in Texas, allowing me to reconnect with old friends that have become stronger relationships now than they ever were before.  There have also been new friends and I have been so blessed to have these talented and kind women be a part of my life.  I fell in love with Baton Rouge in a new light and the people that live in this city with me.

Lemon Ginger Twist: My Diary of Us

Lemon Ginger Twist

This is it...there are only two more days left of 2014.  Every year I say the same thing, but seriously I blinked and the year is over already.  We have only two days to finish the year with a bang and with meaning.  Two days before diets start, new year resolutions begin, and we are all a year older.  And if there were ever a time for you to make a festive drink, tomorrow would be it.  New Year's Eve gives us all an excuse to drink as froo froo of a drink as we want and it should definitely involve some type of sparkling wine or champagne whether you usually go for the bubbles or not. My lemon ginger twist is easy enough for a party and is perfect for watching the ball drop.

Farmer's Market Pork and Collard Green Hash: My Diary of Us

Farmer's Market Pork and Collard Green Hash

Happy last week of 2014!  How was your holiday week?  Mine was pretty good despite the family stuff I had going on...lots of rest, too many sweets, and time spent with friends.  Thanks for all of the kind words and prayers that you sent to me, it really means so much...  This week is always hard because technically it's still the holidays, but we have to get back into our normal routines.   But at least we will have a mid-week break for New Year's to ease us back into reality.  Growing up we always had the same traditional New Year's Day dinner: pork of some sorts, collards, black-eyed peas, and cornbread.  And I of course still make it because superstitions or not, I don't want to risk it!  There are always leftovers with this kind of dinner and I have the best idea for a whole other meal. Farmer's Market Pork and Collard Green Hash is my new obsession for a seasonal hash and you have to make it!

When I went on the Maker's Route road trip, we stayed in the most adorable town called McMinnville in Oregon.  We ate breakfast at the same little cafe every morning and the first morning there we all partook in their Heritage Pork Hash, which consisted of tender pork, braised greens, a farm fresh egg, all over potatoes.  It was to die for.

Merry Christmas: My Diary of Us

Wishing you a Merry Christmas

Hi guys, Merry Christmas!

I am going to be honest here, I am struggling with what to write this morning.  I had this whole plan of writing a normal happy holiday post because as of two days ago that's how I felt.  And then the night before Christmas Eve was a hard one.  I found out some news about a family member that hit me like a train wreck.

You know when something happens that you think could never possibly happen in your life?  It only happens to other people and in movies, never to you.  Well one of those things is happening currently in my family...

...is this real life?
