Homemade Pizza Sauce

Earlier this week I shared my favorite homemade pizza dough recipe with you and it got me thinking that you might also want me to share my favorite easy homemade pizza sauce recipe too. After all if you are going to make pizza, knowing how to make your own pizza sauce with pantry ingredients will probably come in handy! There have been so many times where I have decided to make pizza on a whim and then I don’t have any pizza sauce in the pantry. This led me to start making my own pizza sauce with ingredients I always have on hand! And I have to tell you that after making my own sauce, I rarely use the store bought kind because my homemade version is so much more delicious! Homemade pizza sauce is just what you need to take your pizzas to the next level and I am going to show you just how easy it is.

I have said it before, but pizza night is one of our absolutely favorite family nights and we have it almost weekly. I love figuring out ways to make our pizzas better and better each time we make them and let me tell you that homemade pizza sauce was a game changer for us. The flavor is fresher and more intense than the store bought sauce that has been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long. I use a few ingredients that I usually have stocked in my kitchen and this recipe couldn’t be any easier to make.

For the sauce I use tomato puree, tomato paste, some garlic and onion, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of brown sugar to balance the tomato’s acidity and the result is so delicious. You can definitely double or triple the batch and freeze it so that you always have some on hand. (I highly recommend doing this!) A fresh batch will last at least two weeks in the fridge and is not only great for pizzas but for dipping all sorts of things throughout the week and making other delicious recipes!

You might also be interested in these recipes that are great with pizza sauce.

  • Pesto Risotto Balls with Pizza Sauce for Dipping

  • Egg “Pizza” Bites

  • Homemade Pizza Dough

Ingredients:

  • 10 Oz. Can Tomato Puree

  • 1 Tbsp. Tomato Paste

  • 1/2 Cup Sliced or Diced Onion

  • 2 Smashed Garlic Cloves

  • 1 Tsp. Kosher Salt

  • 1/2 Tsp. Black Pepper

  • 1 Tsp. Italian Seasoning

  • 1/2 Tsp. Brown Sugar

  • 1 Tsp. Olive Oil

Directions:

  • Add olive oil to a saucepan and heat over medium heat.

  • Add onions and garlic and season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning and sauté for 2-3 minutes until onions start to become tender.

  • Add tomato paste and stir for 1-2 minutes just to coat the garlic and onions and to cook the tomato paste a bit.

  • Add in tomato puree and the brown sugar at this time and stir to combine.

  • Turn heat to medium low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes until flavors have combined.

  • Using an immersion blender or regular blender, puree the sauce until the pizza sauce is smooth. (Alternatively if you don’t have a blender, you can chop onion and garlic fine or grate them into the sauce.)

  • Store in a mason jar or airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Pretty easy right? You can totally do this and you will be so glad you did when your pizza taste even better than ever!
