New England Style Haddock Sandwiches

Two years ago my hubby and I went to Maine and fell in love with haddock sandwiches. They were everything you could want in a fish sandwich and more. These haddock sandwiches were made with simple ingredients letting the fish shine through. They were not greasy at all and yet had a perfectly crisp crust on the outside. The bun was golden, dressed simply with tangy tartar sauce and crisp lettuce and pickles. Is your mouth watering yet? (Because mine is, and it’s only 7 am here.) Needless to say we had a haddock fish sandwich almost every single day on our vacation, even if it meant splitting one because we just couldn’t get enough! Lucky for you, I created an at home version of our favorite New England Style Haddock Sandwich that rivals the original sandwich that I fell in love with!

As some of you know, I am an affiliate for Fish Fixe, a sustainable seafood delivery company that was started by two women who have a passion for seafood! I love their products and their seafood is absolutely top notch as far as freshness and quality go! If you have a hard time finding fresh seafood where you live or just want the convenience of it being delivered right to your door, you can use my code MYDIARYOFUS to get $15 dollars off any order over $100 through the month of June!

If you are interested in checking Fish Fixe out, head to to their site and don't forget to use my code to order!

Anyway, they recently added haddock to their selection and I knew right away what I would be making with it since I have a hard time finding fresh haddock here in Texas. This recipe is super simple and is truly delicious and I can’t wait for you to give it a try!

I simply coat the fish with buttermilk and then dredge in panko bread crumbs and fry gently in a skillet until golden brown on both sides. I take that deliciously fried fish and sandwich it between homemade tartar sauce, slathered on a brioche bun and then top with extra pickles and crisp lettuce! It’s a dynamite sandwich that just screams summertime to me! Pair it with your favorite chips and a cold beer and you can be transported to the Maine coast with every single bite!

Note: If you can’t find haddock where you live, you can also sub in halibut or cod for the same style of sandwich!

Ingredients:

  • 4, 4 Oz. Pieces of Haddock

  • 1/2 Cup Buttermilk

  • 1 Cup Panko Bread Crumbs

  • 1 Tsp. Kosher Salt

  • 1/2 Tsp. Black Pepper

  • Brioche Buns

  • Green Leaf or Butter Lettuce

  • Sliced Dill Pickles

  • 1/2 Cup Avocado Oil or Grapeseed Oil for frying fish (can sub another high heat tolerant oil if needed)

For the Tartar Sauce-

  • 1/2 Cup Mayo

  • 2 Tbsp. Dijon Mustard

  • 3 Tbsp. Relish (more if you like it extra relish-y)

  • 1 Tbsp. Fresh Dill

  • 1 Tbsp. Fresh Lemon Juice

  • 1 Tbsp. Chopped Chives

  • 1 Tsp. Kosher Salt

  • 1/2 Tsp. Black Pepper

Directions:

  • Make tartar sauce by combining all ingredients and whisking until smooth. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

  • Place fish into buttermilk and let sit for 10 minutes.

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet on medium high heat until you can stick the back of a wooden spoon in the oil and see tiny bubbles. (That’s how you know the oil is hot enough.)

  • Season the panko bread crumbs with salt and pepper and toss to combine.

  • While the oil heats, remove fish from buttermilk letting excess drip off and then dredge in panko bread crumbs until fish is thoroughly coated.

  • Place fish into hot oil and let cook for 5 minutes per side until golden brown. Do not flip until ready and be very gentle when turning. Some panko crust will fall off, that’s okay.

  • Remove cooked fish onto a paper towel lined baking sheet to let excess oil drain off. Sprinkle with salt while still hot.

  • To assemble, slather desired amount of tartar sauce onto both side of the bun and then layer with lettuce, pickles, and haddock.

  • Sandwich together and serve immediately.
