Cacao "Chocolate" Hummus

Today I was supposed to be at the gym at 8:30 for my favorite class, but Parks decided that this was a good morning to sleep in.  I don't have the heart to wake him, so I will have to do a self-workout at the gym today, which is totally fine.   He is definitely going through a growing spurt I think because he has been sleeping a lot lately, which is A-okay by me!  Of course he would never sleep until 8:00 on a weekend day because that would be too perfect right?  It would be just  about as perfect as my Cacao "Chocolate" Hummus that is made with all good for you ingredients!  This slightly sweet and chocolatey hummus makes for the absolute perfect snack or toast topping!

I had this idea because I saw chocolate hummus in my local grocery store.  It was made with real cocoa (nothing bad about that), had refined sugars, and a couple of weird ingredients that I couldn't pronounce though and I was a little iffy about purchasing it.  I decided since I love making my classic hummus at home, that I might as well give this version a go too!

I swapped the cocoa for cacao, which is loaded with nutrients and got rid of the refined sugars by swapping out a little maple syrup for just the right amount of sweetness.  The result was amazing and even my skeptical hubby has decided this is his new favorite snack!  It is also completely toddler friendly too!

It's so delicious with strawberries or cherries for a healthy afternoon snack and sweet tooth fix!  I think it would be amazing spread on toast with some bananas for a healthy breakfast option as well!  You guys seriously have to try this version at home and then you can feel good about eating chocolate yourself or serving it to your kiddos because this one is 100% healthy!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Drained Cooked or Canned Chickpeas (if canned wash to remove excess sodium)
  • 1/4 Cup Tahini
  • 1/4 Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 Cup Cacao Powder
  • 2 Tbsp. Maple Syrup (you could add more if you want it a little sweeter)
  • 1 Tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 2 Tbsp. of Water or more if needed for consistency

Directions:

  • Combine all ingredients into a food processor and process until smooth and creamy.
  • Add more water if the hummus is too thick.
  • Serve immediately or store in the fridge for easy snacking for up to two weeks!

You guys are  seriously going to love this new take on hummus and I can't wait for you to try it!
