My Diary of Us

The Southern Cucumber

I've been out of the cocktail game for seven months now, and I'll admit my experimentation has gone down because I guess it just isn't as fun when you can't drink your concoctions.  That on top of being in and out of town, and slightly preoccupied with baby stuff, I have failed you in the cocktail department.  But lucky for you, my hubby has recently decided to make up for my lack of mixology in the house and has starting mixing up some cocktails of his own!  The southern cucumber happens to be his new favorite and is the perfect drink to finish out summer!

He actually read about this cocktail in an issue of Esquire Magazine, which makes everything cool just by gracing it's pages.  I was out of town, Canean was here at the house mixing up a storm, and next thing I know he is raving about this drink.  I figured I should share it on here with you guys based on his reviews!

It's bourbon based (hello it is called the southern cucumber), and it's surprisingly refreshing with hints of cucumber, lime, and lemon.  And I will say, that while I am not usually a huge bourbon fan, I did smell this drink and I have to say it smells pretty great.  I would definitely be trying this bourbon cocktail if I weren't pregnant.

Sooo, for all of you that have been looking for a new drink to make at home, this one is for you!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Oz. Bourbon

  • 1 Oz. Simple Syrup (equal parts sugar and water, bring to a boil, dissolve sugar, and chill)

  • 1/4 Chopped Cucumber

  • Juice from One Lime

  • Juice from One Lemon

  • Ginger ale for topping

Directions:

  • Muddle together the bourbon, cucumber, lime and lemon juice, and simple syrup. Really mash the cucumber well so that all of the juice is released and you get lots of that fresh cucumber flavor.

  • Strain over two glasses filled with crushed ice and garnish with extra lemon, lime, and cucumber slices.

  • Serve Immediately.

Note:  This recipe is an adaptation from the Esquire version.

Looks like your weekend just got a whole lot better.  Cheers!
